A tranquil stay which was just what we needed.

Nicky’s emails made us confident that we were on the right track. Business-like but friendly and full of good info.

We had the pleasure of spending 5 nights here with our 6 & 2 year old daughter’s.
As a family holiday there is everything you could want…..lovely well equipped cottages, beautiful scenery, clean safe pool, play parks, playroom full of toys. A wonderful restaurant with very tasty food and helpful staff who obviously pride themselves on doing their job well. The kids had a fab time and loved everything about it and if the kids are happy then parents are happy! We will definitely be returning, I can’t recommend cantueso enough. Thank you Nicky & staff.

We stayed in Mondron last September and enjoyed a very nice evening meal at your restaurant. We are staying in Mondron again this September and will most certainly be dining with you again.
My main reason for writing is to congratulate you on a most informative blog
“well done” very interesting.

We had lunch at your restaurant last Thursday, 18th September. We were staying for a week in Malaga and then Periana and ate out every night. Your food was outstanding and easily the best out of all the restaurants we visited in Spain. We will certainly come again on our next visit to Periana

 Dear Nicky,
As we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye and thank you in person I just wanted yo drop you a quick email to say how very much we enjoyed our 2 week stay at Cantueso. From start to finish (ignoring the lost luggage!) we had a such a great time and you offered us everything we needed to have a thoroughly happy and memorable family holiday. We loved Cantueso (how could you not?) and I have to admit that I actually shed a tear as we drove away on Weds morning and have genuinely missed it since our return home. Credit to all your staff, Jo, Jared and David especially who were welcoming and helpful throughout; please pass on our thanks and appreciation to them again for us.
Anyway, hopefully we will return at some point. We have never returned to the same place to holiday ever before but with Cantueso we will be sorely tempted!
Keep up the good work and thanks again,
All the best,

“Best of both worlds”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

Strongly recommended when you are looking for a quiet (but conveniently close to the village), well managed place with great views and cute comfortable cottages! Very child friendly with abundance of toys for all ages. Also, the availability of baby materials – changing mat, high chair, cutlery, etc. – allowed us to travel much lighter (that is, of course, relatively speaking…). In addition, it is worth renting the mountain buggy as this will be much more comfortable in the rocky terrain than a standard pushchair. We very much enjoyed the combination of visiting nice little villages in the area, the great scenic routes through the mountains, hiking in the area and the afternoon relaxing in the pool. Nice restaurant too. This is what we would call dining (or lunch) with a view! We will definitely go back!!

Would thoroughly recommend these comfortable well appointed apartments and cottages – excellent restaurant, wonderful views, good walking country, owners lovely and helpful. Bars with good food in the village, if you”re self-catering shop before 12.30 in the supermarket – siesta seems to last 4 hours.

“Relaxation in its purest sense….”

We had a wonderful week in Cantueso! Together with our 1-year old daughter we experienced to do absolutely nothing!! We forgot our driver’s license and were without a car. But we can recommend leaving the car! Cantueso has everything you need: a pool, a great cottage, beautiful views, a playground (with swings and trampoline), dvd’s, books and a lot of toys. The staff is very helpful and offered to go to the supermarket for us! But since we needed some exercise we took the 1,5 km trip ourselves. 🙂 The food and wines in the restaurant are also very good, you can even take it with you to your cottage. Our holiday almost appeared to end up with a little disaster, we forgot (…) our camera! But after one phone call our camera was found and on its way to the post office! We want to recommend this place to everyone who seeks for rest, good food, great views and cool cottages where you can sleep like a child!
Room Tip: Our cottage was called Canuelo and we think it had the best view and most sun!

Perfect place with amazing views!”

We had a wonderful week at Cantueso! We were more than satisfied with the cottage, the pool, the restaurant, the very friendly and helpful staff. We had a 1 bedroom cottage, where we stayed with our 5-year old daughter. There was a nice small private terrace where we sat each night after dinner watching the stars. Bathroom was a bit small. We had dinner in the restaurant two nights, very good food and friendly service.
We will definitely recommend this place to friends!

“Second visit and won’t be our last”

Second visit and we love this place. Stunning views, great swimming pool which we often had to ourselves. House is comfortable and well equipped. Staff are so friendly and we used the restaurant every day to either eat there or take away food. Very reasonable prices.

“Stunning Views!”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

Really lovely place, the views are amazing and our little terrace was lovely and private.

You definitely need a hire car when staying here and brush up on some Spanish too as most of the locals in Periana speak no English… all were very friendly though!

The restaurant on-site is really handy and the staff are so lovely, friendly and helpful. The pool was always very clean and there are umbrellas to shelter under when the sun is strong.

“Lovely place!”

Wonderful view, friendly staff and cosy cottages. Perfect for families. Beautiful surroundings, quiet but fairly close to the cosy village of Periana. Torre del Mar just 20 minutes away and a nice swimming pool. Good value for money – we can truly recommend Cantueso, and we would very much like to come back some time.

“Gorgeous view”
Reviewed 2 May 2013

Our stay at the Cantueso cottages was great. We were looking for a nice and quiet place to spend 4 days of holiday. We didn’t go out as much as we are used to because the view was so beautiful and the cottage was spacious. We enjoyed our own barbecue and the fire place inside the house. I was working as well on my laptop and the Wifi connection was very good.
As for the service, that was another thing I enjoyed. We had a warm welcome on arrival. The landlady showed us around and made sure we had everything we needed. Not too exaggerated, just very available. I could see in the little things that the cottage gets a fair amount of attention every time guests leave. E.g. live oil and vinegar ready to use in the kitchen. Makes you feel at home right a way. I believe the owners are passionate about their place and making people feel welcome!! I would love to go back there one day.

We stayed in the penthouse for a week in early September and had one of our best holidays. We were away with our young daughter and the apartment was perfectly equipped (cot, high chair, bath, even toys!). It really was the best of both worlds – self catering with amazing terrace and views and stunning shared pool – with the benefit of a fab restaurant downstairs (must have the deep fried aubergines and the goats cheese salad). Also hosts very helpful and full Of advice on things to do (make sure visit beaches at nerja). And then back to that view – world class 360 degree awe inspiring vistas – wish we were back there!

Idylic Holiday
Reviewed 24 September 2012

This was our first overseas trip with our toddler and it was the perfect blend of a beautiful setting, being off the beaten track but with support and resources close at hand. Periana is a pretty village with all the essentials, and the coast is a short drive away. We even made it to Granada and back in a day. Nicky and the staff at Cantueso are endlessly helpful and they’ve thought of everything to make things easy for families with small children. Lovely pool, comfy cottages, stunning views from every terrace – highly recommended.

Perfect Holiday”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

We stayed at Cantueso in June 2012. Together with my girlfriend and our 15-months old son we had a great holiday.
The cottages are very clean and provide enough room. We had a kitchen, living room, two bedrooms (one on the ground floor and one on the second floor) and a bathroom with toilet (also on the second floor). There was a nice, big terrace with a fence around it, making it an excellent place for our son to play. The terrace even included a bbq.
Cantueso provides us with all the things that we needed for our son, including toys, child seat, child bed, hand blender, a rug to play on, etc.
The weather was very nice, around 30 degrees Celsius. The nice and clean pool provided some cool down for us. The pool was surrounded by a fence and self-closing gates, making the Cantueso property a very child friendly place.
Furthermore Cantueso is located on a beautiful place with an extraordinary view on the lake.
When you stay at Cantueso, a (rental) car is an absolute must-have. It is located in the mountains and all the cities, beaches are not close-by. Periana is the nearest town, and even this place is not easy to reach without car, as you have to go up and down the hills. Especially when you have a child and buggy with you.
I would recommend Cantueso to other people that want to have a quiet holiday, with the possibility to visit places (Granada/Alhambra, Cordoba, Nerja, Malaga, Sevilla, etc) and beaches.
Room Tip: Ask for a room with view on the pool/lake

“Nice place to stay”
Reviewed 11 March 2012

Very nice cottage, beautifully located, with all the mod cons you can expect from a holiday cottage. Very nice Andalusian style, both inside and out. Small windows with wooden shutters. On the whole the cottages are designed to keep the heat out, which is no doubt an advantage in the summer heat, but it tends to get pretty cold in the evening and at night in February / March. After all, Cantueso is at a 600-meter altitude. The wood burning fireplace (nice!) and using the air-conditioner as a heater helped. However, firewood and extended use of the airco are extras!

Surroundings are great, good for hikes. Picturesque villages in the neighbourhood. The olive oil factory in Periana is well worth a visit, if only to buy some of their excellent “aceite”. Make sure to take a walk on the former railway track from nearby Ventas de Zefarraya, great views!

If you want to visit the cultural highlights of Andalusia (Granada, Seville, Cordobá etc.) you will have to drive quite a distance of narrow mountain roads with plenty of hairpin bends before reaching the motorway. The local roads are all right, but the A-7204 to Periana was definitely not designed for speeding, so take your time when planning a day trip!

And here’s an advice for satnav-users. On the Cantueso-website there are excellent route instructions including YouTube-movies telling you how to drive. Make sure to study these before you visit for the 1st time. On reaching the direct neighbourhood of Periana our satnav kept on insisting that we take all kinds of byways, some hardly better than cattle-tracks. (Lucky for us, we followed the Cantueso website instructions rather than our satnav and did NOT end up in the middle of the olive trees… Or we’ve got a lousy satnav, that’s another possibility)

Very nice location in the mountains near Periana. Located at a hill with so much to see. Even the children liked the ‘casa rurale’. With a swimming pool filled with water in the winter. We couldn’t swim, but playing in the pool was possible with very cold feet… It still was fun. Nice weather, 7 days of sun. The beach is about 35 minutes away at Torre del Mar and Alhambra is about 1 and a half hours away, its really worth a visit!
The restaurant has nice food, we have enjoyed it a lot

We stayed at El Cantueso in August 2010 with our 4 year old daughter. We had previously stayed in Periana and visited El Cantueso for dinner and loved it so thought we would come back and stay there. We definitely didn’t regret it and had an amazing holiday. The cottage was fab and being so close to the pool was a real plus. We liked the fact that there were lots of different nationalities staying in the cottages and the children could all play together! Nicky and her dad did everything to make our stay totally welcoming and their warmth and high levels of customer service made this a truly relaxing stay (just what we needed!) they were real naturals with children and went out of their way to make our stay hassle free with excellent children’s meals, crazy golf and plenty of toys in the pool! All in all, El Cantueso is an idyllic place to stay and the hosts are fab x

We rode our bicycles to Cantueso and were thrilled to find a comfortable place to rest with unbelievable food in an amazingly beautiful setting. Simply amazing!

It wasn’t the first time we were at Cantueso and for sure not the last time!!!. We had a great time!!!
The place is so great to be. The kindness!!! The surrounding!!!
So see you this year

A wonderful place. Houses are a bit outdated but offer almost everything you’ll need. Staff is kind and helpful. Lovely pool with a stunning view (also from the terraces of the houses), and the view from the terrace of the restaurant nearby (very much recommended) is even more special. Mountains, little whitewashed towns (lovely when lit at night), a big lake, the sea in the distance… And hey, you’re in Andalucia, so even when you want to leave the place there is close by a whole lot to see!

We stayed here in a 2 bedroom cottage last June 2010 for one week and we loved our time in this beautiful place! The views are outstanding, everywhere you turn from this mountainside hideaway are views that take your breath away, you can see for miles views of the sea, lakes, mountains and white washed villages. If you need to clear your head, this is the place.
It’s a small complex but with so much space all around. The restaurant is excellent and the take away service is a wonderful thing, you can put the children to bed and enjoy quality food on your terrace watching the sun go down.
The cottages are very cosy and a bit on the small side but you can eat outdoors in good weather.
We enjoyed visiting the local village Periana, it’s very friendly and very Spanish, hardly anyone speaks English, so its great to practice your Spanish!
The owner Nicky is lovely and on our arrival in the evening, tired out without any supplies or water she put together a lovely starter pack to see us through to the next morning.
Adults and children seemed to enjoy it all and we’d love to return one day!

We feel safe here, children are free to play on the property and we feel safe to leave the door open. Very friendly and available to help any time (even teabags when you don’t have them…)
We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location is great, the views are breathtaking. The houses and the way they’re arranged are lovely. It’s like a little village. Very easy to make contact with your neighbours if you want to, but enough private corners if you’d rather not. Will definitely recommend Cantueso to friends and family!”

Suggest you make a bigger apartment for 5/6 people however the views were 360 degrees and wonderful. We will continue to be addicted to the webcam! Restaurant: Menu could have been better if changed more over two week period….however loved the food (particularly prawns/aubergine/duck- most things!
Nicky thanks for a lovely holiday, you have a beautiful apartment and restaurant which we all appreciated. The ambience is also so welcoming and relaxing.

The frequent visits of the cat was an enrichment to the homeliness of the cottage. We bought her some food. Hopefully our successor inhabitants will find it and won’t disappoint her in her expectations (even if she can make herself very clear). We really liked the grey/gold cat (looked like the daughter of the restaurant cat). We hope that it will be cared for. ….she is so sweet and tame not at all like a stray cat.

Had everything we needed, great terrace, BBQ and the shutters are a god-send for sleeping baby. I love the way the cottages connect but are still very private.
Fantastic that child friendly items such as steriliser and staff so welcoming to us with a baby. Wonderful that food is available to take away and a changing daily special would have been welcome. We will recommend Cantueso to our friends. A lovely friendly family welcoming complex-just what we needed. Thank you Nicky and gang.

Very good vegetarian options, unusual for Spain! We appreciated the “take-away” facility. We really did enjoy our stay -perfect position and scenery- and very relaxing. Our extra four days was a bonus.

We stayed in one of your cottages last evening and also ate at the restaurant, the whole idea was to have a real break from reality and we certainly achieved that.
We arrived to find the cottage, not only in wonderful surroundings but spotlessly clean. The restaurant, only a short stroll away, must have one of the most outstanding views in the whole of Axarquia, add to this being greeted by smiling faces, superb service and a wonderful meal it is surely a little piece of paradise.
We would recommend this to anyone wishing to eat well at extremely affordable prices and to try and spend some time at the cottages. We will most certainly be back, and soon we hope.
Thank you both, we have arrived home refreshed.

“A fantastic location, very peaceful, great on site restaurant with views”

This was our second stay at Cantueso. The location is fantastic – great views – it’s away from hustle and bustle of tourists but within a 20 minute drive you can be at the coast. The cottages are typical Andalucian style – no luxuries or mod cons but are very clean and have everything you need. If you need anything extra provided, nothing is too much trouble. It is very safe for children and our children each year make European friends – they have no language barrier. The on-site restaurant is fantastic. Great food cooked by Carmen and her team. Again, nothing is too much trouble. There is a good choice of food and wine and you can also take food and wine back to your cottage if you so wish. We cannot fault Cantueso – we would recommend it to anyone. You really need to have a hire car – the walk to the village is, in our opinion, a bit too far. We have already booked for 2010. Nicky and all of her staff deserve to do well.

“Wonderful location for a group.”

Having enjoyed Cantueso as a couple on a number of occasions, we shared the experience with six other couples. All fourteen agreed that Nicky and her staff both planned and oversaw our stay in a most satisfactory way. There were NO complaints – nothing but plaudits. The convenience to airports, the village, supermarkets, places of interest, majestic scenery and wonderful walking country make this an ideal holiday centre for two to sixteen people.
